Security deployment in Syria’s coast, attempts to prevent protests

Syria’s coastal region has witnessed a heavy security deployment and road closures by the transitional government, alongside calls for protests, amid fears of escalating tensions following the bombing of the Imam Ali Mosque in Homs.

Several areas along the Syrian coast today saw an extensive security presence by masked elements affiliated with the Syrian transitional government forces, accompanied by the complete closure of roads in a number of locations. These measures have sparked anxiety and fear among residents, in the absence of any official explanations regarding the reasons behind them.

This deployment comes at a time of heightened tension in the region, following a call by Sheikh Ghazal Ghazal, head of the Supreme Alawite Islamic Council in Syria and the diaspora, for protests scheduled to take place today from 12:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m.

These developments follow the bombing that occurred inside the courtyard of the Imam Ali Mosque in the Wadi al-Dhahab neighborhood of Homs on 26 December, which killed 8 people and injured 27 others, including 3 children, raising fears of potential escalation in Syria’s coastal region in the coming hours.
