PYD's Hesso: Syria's Interim Authority ignores minority rights

With candles lit in remembrance of the martyrs, Gharib Hesso, the co-chair of the Democratic Union Party (PYD), spoke about the genocides the Yazidi community has faced—most recently at the hands of ISIS mercenaries—and the long-term impact of those massacres.

He also highlighted the progress the Yazidi community made after the 2014 genocide, especially in terms of organizing themselves socially and militarily to protect their existence.

Hesso praised the role of the Yazidis in North and East Syria during the July 19 Revolution, their contributions to local governance, and their sacrifices within the ranks of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and internal security forces. He emphasized that the Yazidis are genuine partners with other religious groups in the region.

He also addressed the suffering of the Syrian people today due to the dominance of certain parties who hijacked the goals of the 2011 uprising.

Hesso criticized the current authority in Damascus for denying the rights of Syria's components and committing crimes in areas like the Syrian coast and Suwayda—taking advantage of the weak social organization in those regions, unlike North and East Syria, where a democratic and inclusive society has been built since the start of the July 19 revolution.

Hesso concluded by stating that the current transitional government in Syria lacks fair and inclusive representation and continues to marginalize the country’s diverse social groups.
