MP Gulistan Kılıç Koçyiğit reveals details of meeting with leader Abdullah Ocalan

Speaking during the general session of parliament, MP Gulistan Kılıç Koçyiğit, who visited Imrali Island alongside members of the National Solidarity, Fraternity, and Democracy Committee and held a meeting with leader Abdullah Ocalan, highlighted the main points of the encounter.

A Clear Message

Kılıç Koçyiğit stated that their meeting took place in a positive atmosphere, saying: “Yesterday, a historic meeting was held with Mr. Ocalan. This meeting is an important and promising step toward opening a new path for Turkey’s journey toward peace and democracy. It should be regarded as a significant historical development. The meeting carries the potential to establish a platform for dialogue that can build a shared future for our peoples. Once again, Mr. Ocalan clearly and openly expressed, during our meeting, the will of all the region’s peoples particularly the Turkish and Kurdish peoples for a shared, peaceful, balanced, and free life. Yesterday marked an important stage in the path toward peace and a democratic society. The success of this process is crucial for Turkey’s future.”

The Kurdish Issue Cannot Be Confined to Current Political Boundaries

Kılıç Koçyiğit noted that they had wished for all committee members to participate in the meeting with “Apo,” adding: “We evaluated this critically, yet it must be understood that not having everyone present at the meeting is not a loss for the peoples of Turkey; on the contrary, it is a significant gain. Once again, we affirm: the Kurdish issue cannot be confined within the limits of current politics; it is not an instrument for any political party to use for short-term interests. This is one of the fundamental obstacles to democracy in Turkey, and solutions must be found. Everyone must view this perspective as a foundation and shape their policies and practices accordingly.”

Necessary Legal Reforms Must Not Be Delayed

She continued: “As the Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Parti), we are committed to our responsibility to ensure the success of this process. However, the ruling party, the opposition, and state institutions also bear responsibilities in this regard. Advancing the path to peace requires accelerating the implementation of necessary legal reforms without delay. Peace cannot be achieved by the efforts of one side alone; it requires a collective societal will. What must be done now is to seize this historic opportunity by completing the committee’s report without any delay and hastening the implementation of legal guarantees across society. This stage will only hold meaning if it is translated into concrete steps and actual decisions; peace can only become a societal reality through the building of trust
