At least 648 protesters have been killed in a campaign by Iranian security forces to suppress the protest movement sweeping the country, the organization said, noting that the death toll is likely to rise.

Commenting on the verified death toll, the organization’s director, Mahmoud Amiry-Moghaddam, said that “it is the duty of the international community to protect civilian protesters from mass killing by the Islamic Republic.”

The organization added that “according to some estimates, more than 6,000 may have been killed,” but cautioned that the Iranian authorities’ internet blackout for nearly four days makes it “extremely difficult to independently verify these reports.”
