Over 70 Israeli movements in Southern Syria in one Month

The southern region of Syria has witnessed a notable escalation in Israeli military activity over the past month (November), as Israeli forces continued to carry out ground and aerial incursions inside Syrian territory. These operations are described by Tel Aviv as “preemptive measures” aimed at preventing Iran-aligned armed groups from establishing a presence near the border.

A total of 74 incursions were recorded in the border areas of Quneitra and Daraa during November, ranging from direct reconnaissance missions to limited penetrations by special units, in addition to field strikes targeting sites believed to be used for surveillance or weapons transfer.

During three of these incursions, clashes erupted between Israeli forces and local groups accused of coordinating their activities with external actors. The most significant of these was the recent raid on the town of Beit Jinn in rural Damascus, which resulted in the deaths of at least 15 Syrians and the injury of 20 others, along with six wounded Israeli soldiers and officers.

These movements coincided with a series of broader attacks involving heavy shelling, arrest campaigns, the establishment of field checkpoints, and the bulldozing of roads and farmlands. This comes amid complete official silence from the Syrian transitional government and the absence of any deterrent measures to contain the growing tension in the south.

Objectives of the Israeli Movements

Israeli assessments, cited in Israeli media reports, indicate that the incursions aim to “prevent the transfer of precision weapons” to southern Syria and counter attempts to establish or reinforce surveillance posts near the Golan Heights.

Tel Aviv states that the increased activity of Iran-aligned groups necessitates direct field action, unlike previous years in which Israel relied primarily on airstrikes with minimal ground involvement.

These movements are also intended to gather precise on-ground intelligence, particularly following recent security changes, including the redeployment of local forces and the widening security vacuum in some rural areas.

Potential Implications for Southern Syria

This escalation has triggered significant concern among local residents, especially in the villages of Quneitra and western rural Daraa, where civilians have documented frequent drone flights and recurring nighttime explosions over recent weeks.

With no clear official stance from authorities, developments remain open to multiple possibilities amid both local and international anticipation over whether the current pace of incidents will remain limited or evolve into a new phase of conflict in southern Syria; especially following the recent attack in Beit Jinn, which wounded six Israeli soldiers, including officers.
