Prosperous agriculture in Deri-ez-Zor after defeating IS

Deir ez-Zor is considered the food basket for the countryside and the city for the fertility and breadth of its land and the diversity of its crops, which made it a source of the many and varied agricultural products, despite the years of siege and war from the forces of darkness and capitalism, until the agricultural sector returned after its liberation from IS' mercenaries.

Deir ez-Zor city was the main source of agricultural crops, especially wheat, which is a strategic crop of Syria as well as the cultivation of cotton, corn, sugar beet, garlic and others.

The General Directorate of Agriculture is now working on a census of cultivated land in Deir ez-Zor in its eastern and western suburbs.

In recent years Deir ez-Zor witnessed the exit of many agricultural areas from the service, because of proximity to the places of fighting and clashes, and exposed to shelling, which caused irrigation channels to get out of service, because of the systematic bombing, where several water pumps were destroyed in the western and eastern Deir ez-Zor villages.

During Daesh occupation of the area, the farmers have severely suffered, many measures had been taken by Daesh caused several problems to agriculture sector, where the so-called agriculture divan was formed, imposing extra taxes on the farmer.

On the other hand, seed prices continued to rise to record levels ranging from 210 to 225 SYP per kilo of wheat, while fertilizers reached the price of one bag to 41,000 SYP, up to the price of diesel fuel, which amounted to 200 SP per liter, which led to significantly Agriculture decline and burdened the farmer.

After liberating of the western and eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor from IS' mercenaries by virtue of the Syrian Democratic Forces SDF and the formation of Deir ez-Zor Civil Council and committees, including the Agriculture Committee, which worked hard in the agricultural sector to promote them.

Eng. Nahla al- Ali, Director General of Agriculture saying :"We provided several facilities for farmers, including wheat seeds varieties at nominal prices. We also provided various fertilizers, super phosphate and super potassium, in addition to subsidizing fuel from the fuel oil at subsidized prices for agricultural associations.

And we will support the farmers to establish of an agricultural pharmacy within the General Directorate of Agriculture to provide agricultural medicines and drugs to prevent spreading the diseases such as wild eggplant.
