​​​​​​​European politicians' slams Europe's limited move towards Ankara

The EU affirmed that the stability IN the Eastern Mediterranean is a strategic interest of the member states. EC President Charles Michel said Tuesday that the Block countries are united concerned at Turkey.

Members of the European Parliament today in Brussels called on Ankara to take more steps to reduce tension in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Michel explained that the European summit set a strategy for dealing with Ankara according to two tracks: a willingness to use all available means to protect its interests, while preparing at the same time to meet Turkey, if it responds to the requests of member states, to enter negotiations to update the customs agreement and encourage relations between the components of civil society from the European and Turkish sides, and raising the level of political dialogue.

The European summit mandated the High Representative, Josep Borrell, to discuss the possibilities of holding an international conference on the eastern Mediterranean that would address security, maritime borders, energy and migration issues in the region.

Representatives of political groupings in the European Parliament slammed the limited European move towards Turkey despite its violation of the sovereignty of member states on the one hand, and its ongoing domestic policies of violating basic human rights.

The head of the European People's Party, the largest bloc in Parliament, said, “The public opinion does not understand the motives for continuing Turkey's membership negotiations.” It is known that membership negotiations have been frozen for years due to human rights violations and the retreat of the rule of law in Turkey.
