WHO: Gaza still facing humanitarian and health emergency

The World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed that the humanitarian and health emergency in Gaza is continuing, calling for medical aid to be allowed into the territory, health facilities to be rehabilitated, and medical evacuations to be expanded.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said during his participation in the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, currently being held in New York, that the Gaza Strip continues to face a humanitarian and public health emergency, despite nearly a year having passed since the ceasefire.

Ghebreyesus said the health system in the territory is under immense pressure, while humanitarian and health needs remain extremely high.

The WHO director-general stressed the need to ensure that humanitarian aid reaches the Gaza Strip rapidly, sustainably and without impediments.

He added that medical supplies and equipment must be allowed into the territory, alongside the rehabilitation of health facilities, the reopening of patient referral pathways and the expansion of medical evacuation operations.
