Iranian authorities executed two men today for their participation in protests that took place in the city of Isfahan earlier this year protests which, according to official charges, resulted in the deaths of four police officers. The executions have drawn criticism from human rights groups regarding the conditions under which the men were tried.

The Mizan news agency, affiliated with the Iranian judiciary, reported that the death sentences were carried out by hanging. Reuters, citing the Fars news agency, identified the two men as Amir Hossein Maleki and Amir Hossein Ebrahimi, noting that their sentences had been upheld by the Supreme Court.

The case stems from events that occurred at Alikhani Square in Isfahan during protests on January 8. The organization "Iran Human Rights" stated that the men were convicted of "waging war against God" and "corruption on earth" charges based on accusations that they disrupted public security and used weapons to incite terror.

Separately, the human rights organization Hengaw reported that the executions were carried out at Isfahan Central Prison, noting that the families of the two men had been summoned on Monday for a final visit. It added that the execution of these two individuals brings the total number of those executed in this same case, in which 12 people were sentenced to death to nine.

Meanwhile, the organization "Iran Human Rights" condemned what it described as grave violations of fair trial guarantees, accusing the authorities of using torture to extract confessions from the defendants and testimony against them.

The organization warned that three other defendants in the case are at risk of execution, and it called on the international community to take action to halt these executions and ensure the protection of the lawyers representing the defendants.
