The award events will officially kick off on June 17.
The official invitation stated: "The events of the Women's Journalism Awards named after Gurbetelli Ersöz will kick off on June 17, dedicated to the journalists who pursue the truth fearlessly and become the voice of their time."
Who is Gurbetelli Ersöz?
Gurbetelli Ersöz was born in 1965 in the village of Ziver, located in the Balu district of Elazig province.
She completed her primary education in her village and continued her middle school studies in the city of Adana.
She graduated from the Department of Chemistry at Çukurova University and completed her postgraduate studies (Master) in the field of Environment and Energy, working as a teaching assistant in chemistry.
In 1993, Gurbetelli began her journalism career at the newspaper Özgür Gündem, and soon became the first female editor-in-chief in Turkey.
On October 8, 1997, she lost her life in an incident while she was in Southern Kurdistan. Since then, her memory has been honored annually on October 7, which is now known as "The Day of Kurdish Women Journalists."
Gurbetelli Ersöz became a symbol of female journalists who work as witnesses in the field. She was a pioneer of free journalism and represented a model of Kurdish media committed to the causes of freedom and justice.
