Rising cases of sexual violence in Sudan raise concerns

Women activists and women’s and human rights organizations have reported rising numbers of cases of sexual violence against women and young women in Sudan, warning that the reported figures do not reflect the actual scale of the violations.

The “No to the Oppression of Women” initiative said in a report that in August 2023, it dealt with the case of 28 Filipino women who said they had been subjected to a mass assault in the Al-Mamoura area of Khartoum. According to their testimonies, members of the Rapid Support Forces were responsible for the assault. The initiative later helped evacuate the women to Wad Madani and then to Port Sudan. In Darfur, the Women for Peace and Security group said it had received information three months ago indicating that more than 225 cases of sexual violence and various other violations had been recorded in a single displacement camp.

Meanwhile, the Women’s Strategic Initiative said its field monitoring had recorded more than 71 cases in a single week in some areas of Kordofan. It noted that the phenomenon is not limited to one region, but extends across Darfur, White Nile, Al Jazira, and Khartoum.

The Kayan Organization for Women’s Empowerment said its team had documented more than 160 cases of various violations against women and young women since the conflict broke out in mid-April 2023. These included assault and conflict-related sexual violence, as well as physical violence, threats, extortion, and exploitation.
