The LAF announced that it had foiled what it described as an attempt to “smuggle a quantity of highly explosive materials from Syrian territory into Lebanon.”

In a statement, the LAF Command’s Directorate of Orientation said one of its units, following surveillance and monitoring operations along the northern and eastern borders on Thursday, managed to “seize about 245 kilograms of highly explosive TNT, four explosive devices and eight detonators, in addition to electrical wires used for the detonators, while they were being smuggled from Syrian territory into Lebanon.”

The statement added that “the smugglers fled toward Syrian territory as soon as an Army patrol arrived at the site,” and that the Army was unable to arrest any of them.

The Command did not specify where the materials were seized or which border crossing or point was involved in the operation. It also did not disclose the route used by the smugglers to transport the shipment from Syria.

The LAF said the seized materials were handed over to the relevant authorities, while follow-up and coordination efforts are continuing to identify those involved and work toward their arrest.

The announcement comes amid continued security measures along the Syrian-Lebanese border to combat smuggling operations. According to the statement, no official information has yet identified the party behind the shipment or the purpose of transporting it.
