The Syrian transitional government’s Ministry of Information on Thursday denied reports that it held a secret meeting or direct talks with representatives of Lebanese Hezbollah in Turkey, describing the reports as “false claims” with no basis in fact.

The official Syrian denial came in response to a report by Reuters, which cited intelligence and security sources as saying that Syrian intelligence and Foreign Ministry officials met with Hezbollah representatives in Turkey last month under Turkish auspices. The meeting reportedly aimed to discuss shared security issues and reduce tensions along the border between the two sides.

The agency cited six sources familiar with the matter, including two Syrian officials, a U.S. official, and a senior Lebanese security source close to Hezbollah. The sources said the two sides held at least one meeting last month, in what would be the first known meeting of its kind between them after years of confrontation in Syria.
