Mahboubeh Shabani, a political prisoner detained following last January's protests, has launched a hunger strike to protest the conditions of her quarantine at Vakil-Abad Prison in Mashhad and the continued uncertainty surrounding her case, according to the women's news agency NUJINHA.

Reports indicate that she was transferred to quarantine as a punitive measure and subjected to violent treatment during the transfer; furthermore, the unsanitary conditions within the quarantine area caused her to develop a skin disease.

Shabani was arrested in Mashhad and held in solitary confinement for an extended period before being transferred to the women's ward. The indictment alleges that she used her motorcycle to transport injured individuals to medical centers during the protests, while the charge of "waging war" was dropped from the final version of the indictment several weeks ago.
