North Korea's Central News Agency said  that the two leaders agreed to "resume constructive dialogues and push them forward in order to make a breach with regard to denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula."

"The handshake exchanged by the leaders of the two countries in Panmunjom," the village where the truce was signed in 1953, is "a historic event," the agency said.

North Korea on Monday described the meeting between its leader Kim Jong-un and US President Donald Trump in the demilitarized zone as "historic" and "wonderful."

"They agreed to stay in close contact in the future," she said.

The North Korean news agency reported that Kim praised the "good personal relations" with Trump.

Trump's visit is the first by a US president to North Korea.
