Regarding the implications for intellectuals to achieve the freedom of leader Abdullah Ocalan, the co-chair of the Aleppo Cultural Forum, Ahmed Berhat, spoke to ANHA's agency. He pointed out at the beginning to the leader’s great role in empowering intellectuals and their contribution to enlightening societies.

Berhat confirmed that Leader Abdullah Ocalan developed new concepts, which made him an intellectual free from the restrictions imposed by capitalist systems. He developed these concepts to achieve his ideal idea through the democratic nation project.

Berhat also noted that the paradigm issued by Leader Abdullah Ocalan had a positive side for the people, represented by the majority of the components and peoples resorting to representing themselves under the umbrella of the democratic nation, which shifted the compass of the regimes to target him and hatch conspiracies against him, since his idea constitutes the end of those regimes.

Berhat believed that Leader Abdullah Ocalan, by rejecting all individual concessions for his person and preferring the public interest over his individual interest, kept him detained until now, without legal justification in Imrali, and that position turned him into a living symbol in the minds of all people yearning for freedom.

“Berhat spoke about the leader’s role in resolving the issues and crises that the peoples suffer from. The leader worked to decipher the capitalist system, which finds continuity in its survival in establishing an authoritarian entity.

He added, “The people in the Middle East region find in the person of the leader the qualities of a savior from disaster and an inspiration in creating a solution and the future, and thus he has become an international leader for many peoples.”

Berhat pointed out that the strict isolation imposed on the leader since the beginning of the July 19th revolution about 12 years ago is the result of the regimes’ fear, and that Turkey is a tool in the hands of those regimes, to sever the intellectual connection between the people and the leader. Pointing out the failure of these policies; Because the people continue to resist according to the ideas and philosophy of leader Abdullah Ocalan.”

Leader Abdullah Ocalan has been detained for over 24 years on Imrali Island prison in the Sea of Marmara. This detention followed an international conspiracy executed by international and regional forces in 1999 in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi. He was then handed over to the Turkish occupation state on February 15 of the same year. The last meeting with the leader was conducted by his lawyers, Rezan Sarıja and Newroz Uysal, on August 7, 2019. His last contact with the outside world was on March 25, 2021, during a 5-minute phone call with his brother, Muhammad Ocalan, which was abruptly cut off.

In their efforts to meet with him, the lawyers from Al-Asr Law Office submit two requests each week to the Public Prosecutor’s Office in the Turkish city of Bursa and the Imrali Prison Directorate. Their families also submit two requests per week, amounting to 16 requests monthly, yet they have not received any response. This lack of response indicates a refusal to allow them to meet with Abdullah Ocalan.

While Berhat pointed out that ending isolation is a goal that intellectuals must achieve, he explained some points that must be emulated to reach the desired goal through:

Transforming the Manifesto of Democratic Civilization, with its five volumes and 4,000 pages, into a basic reference for training society.

Working to raise awareness about resisting capitalism, and emulating the leader’s resistance in this field, to reach a truly popular paradigm.

Escalating the populist struggle stipulated in the leader’s books until his physical freedom is achieved, even if after a while.

International human rights organizations, led by the United Nations, have yet to respond to popular, political, and cultural calls for the physical freedom of leader Abdullah Ocalan, despite widespread discontent and activities that have not stopped since his arrest, the latest of which is the global campaign “Freedom for Abdullah Ocalan, the solution” “For the Kurdish issue,” which was launched last October by intellectuals, politicians, and researchers from all over the world.”
