The Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) announced the outcomes of its congress held from May 5 to 7, in a statement released on May 12. In a statement to Firat News Agency, Khalida Ankizek stated that the PKK has fulfilled its mission in the battle for the existence and freedom of the Kurdish people and is now entering a new phase of struggle based on an advanced political and social approach.

Speaking in the interview, Ankizek said: “We held the 12th Congress of the PKK and made historic decisions during this congress. Based on the perspectives and analyses of our leader in terms of ideological, philosophical, and scientific models, our party, which was founded 52 years ago, held its congress on the basis of transitioning from the model of state-based real socialism to the new model of democratic socialism.”

She added that during the congress, “a decision was made to dissolve the party and end the armed struggle, along with other resolutions that serve as a foundation alongside these two historic decisions.”

She emphasized that the PKK emerged in the context of the ongoing Kurdish issue, at a time when the identity and existence of Kurdistan were threatened with genocide, symbolically, the enemy had buried the idea of Kurdistan in a concrete grave in Agri. She pointed out that the PKK’s ideas emerged through early leftist groups, rooted in the concept of “colonized Kurdistan,” and these groups eventually moved towards founding the party.

She explained that the PKK carried out a national liberation struggle based on the principle that “every people has the right to self-determination,” and made significant sacrifices. She said: “Our party went through three major phases: the biological foundation, the party formation, and democratic modernity. It led a unique struggle during this period, showing tremendous willpower. More than 45,000 martyrs were lost in this path, thousands of our people were displaced due to war, and the nature of Kurdistan was devastated.”

She added: “We gave our bravest and most noble comrades, starting from comrade Haki Karer to comrades Fouad, Riza, Sar, Beritan, and Zilan. On this basis, I congratulate the 12th Congress in the name of Leader Apo and commemorate the martyrs of the freedom cause with gratitude and respect.”

Continuing the struggle on the path of the Leader

She noted that Leader Abdullah Ocalan deepened his intellectual and scientific research not only for the Kurdish people but for all humanity. She said: “Leader Apo expanded the PKK to be a tool for achieving socialism and stood against the system of capitalist modernity and patriarchal domination.”

She emphasized that “the PKK is the party of the Leader, it is a path, a way of life. The PKK is Mazlum, Kemal, Khairy, Zilan, Beritan, Fouad, and Riza. The PKK has established its throne as an epic of freedom and rebirth in our hearts and will live within us forever.”

Building a democratic society based on women and equality

Regarding the next phase, Ankizek confirmed that the struggle will not end but will instead adopt new forms more aligned with the coming period. She stated: “We will continue our struggle until we achieve our goal of building a democratic, ethical, and political society centered around women and the complete elimination of patriarchal state power. The forms may change, but the struggle will continue by all means, and we will carry on our struggle on the path of Leader Apo.”

She added: “I participated in two PKK congresses, the 11th and 12th. I experienced moments like these during the congress. I looked into the eyes of all the comrades. I wanted to see meaning in their eyes and I did. I never saw regret in a comrade’s eyes. There may be self-criticism, but the PKK has not failed. The PKK has fulfilled its mission to the fullest.”

She concluded by affirming that the dissolution of the PKK does not mean the end of the struggle but rather represents a new beginning based on the concept of democratic socialism, where women will continue to lead the fight until a democratic socialist society free from male domination is achieved.
