Neighborhoods in Hasakah still suffer from lack of water despite resumption of pumping from Alouk Station

Following the resumption of water pumping from Alouk Station to the city of Hasakah and its surrounding towns, several neighborhoods, including Al-Nasra, Al-Kababa, Al-Zuhour, Al-Salhiya, and Al-Mufti, are still suffering from a lack of water reaching some of their streets.

In Al-Nasra neighborhood, resident Mohammed Al-Atiya said that the neighborhood is located in an elevated area and that the pumping line is shared with Al-Kababa neighborhood, making it difficult for water to reach some homes. He added that water reaches only a limited number of houses.

Al-Atiya called for opening the “sluice valve” located at the top of the neighborhood and separating the water supply from Al-Kababa neighborhood, which would allow water to reach Boumaish Street and the rest of the homes in the area.

For his part, resident Mohammed Al-Raja said that most neighborhoods receive water, with the exception of parts of their neighborhood. He said that they had submitted several complaints and that the problem had also been inspected, but had not yet been repaired.

He added that residents are forced to purchase water and fill their tanks at a cost of up to 75,000 Syrian pounds, and called on the Water Institution to resolve the problem and ensure that water reaches the neighborhood.

For his part, resident Ahmed Al-Qassab explained that he had visited the Water Institution and that engineers and employees had come to the neighborhood to inspect the problem. He said that low pumping pressure was one of its causes.

Al-Qassab called for pumping to be distributed among the neighborhoods in a way that ensures water reaches areas and streets located at different elevations.

In this context, Farhan Al-Owais, director of the General Company for Drinking Water and Sanitation in Hasakah Governorate, said that the company is carrying out maintenance and repairing breaks that are reported during the pumping period. It is also replacing “sluice valves” and implementing sections of the networks in neighborhoods where water cannot reach, in partnership with ACF.

Al-Owais added that technical teams are monitoring the pumping process in areas that do not receive water and are working to ensure that the “sluice valves” supplying the neighborhoods are functioning properly and replacing them when faults are found.

He noted that the technical teams are working in Al-Kababa neighborhood to inspect the “sluice valves” supplying the area. He said that water reaches the neighborhood during the pumping period, while some streets remain without water, and that the company is working to resolve the problem.

Al-Owais explained that the company, in partnership with ACF, is working to resolve the water supply problem in Al-Zuhour neighborhood by establishing a network connection to the Euphrates line from Al-Aziziya Station. In addition, a network connection is being implemented near the Panorama Roundabout and linked to the network supplying the neighborhood, with the aim of improving water access to the area.

The problem of water failing to reach some neighborhoods coincided with a power outage in the city that has lasted for around ten days, further increasing residents’ hardship and limiting their ability to benefit from the water when it does arrive.
