Abdul Karim Omar: Kurdish unity is national necessity

The 24th General Assembly of the Kurdistan National Congress (KNK) began on Saturday in the Dutch city of Veldhoven, with the participation of 300 delegates from different parts of Kurdistan and abroad. Abdul Karim Omar attended as the representative of Rojava.

Speaking to our agency, Abdul Karim Omar said that the importance of the meeting stems from its sensitive timing and the serious, unprecedented challenges and risks facing the Kurdish people, threatening their existence and identity.

He noted that the achievements made in Rojava and Southern Kurdistan are currently facing critical challenges that require the highest level of national responsibility and joint action among all Kurdish forces.

He added: “The recent developments in Rojava and the setbacks it has experienced as a result of regional and international agreements made at the expense of the Kurdish people were strongly reflected in the conference discussions, given the strategic importance of this experience for the Kurds and all democratic forces in the region.”

He continued: “Through my participation in the conference sessions, I observed broad consensus among attendees that the current period carries both risks and opportunities. Alongside efforts to redraw the balance of power in the region, there are real possibilities for the Kurds to strengthen their legitimate rights and enhance their political and legal standing in accordance with international conventions and the rights of peoples.”

He pointed out that the meeting highlighted calls to accelerate efforts toward convening a comprehensive Kurdish National Congress, as a framework capable of bringing together various Kurdish energies and unifying political and diplomatic visions, thereby protecting national gains and strengthening the Kurdish position at both regional and international levels.

He added: “The message of Abdullah Öcalan to the conference carried special significance, as it included a clear call for dialogue, national consensus, and overcoming narrow partisan disputes. This call aligns with the aspirations of the majority of the Kurdish people, who seek a new era based on unity, cooperation, and national partnership.”

Abdul Karim Omar emphasized that what the Kurds need today, more than ever, is a common platform that unites different political forces and trends around higher national interests.

“The challenges facing our people are greater than any single party can bear, and protecting the achievements won through the sacrifices of thousands of martyrs requires collective will and a unified strategic vision,” he said.

He stressed that “the conference affirmed that the Kurdish issue remains alive and capable of asserting its presence, and that Kurdish unity is no longer merely a political demand, but a national and historical necessity imposed by the nature of the current stage and the complexities of regional transformations.”

The Rojava representative at the 24th General Assembly of the Kurdistan National Congress concluded by emphasizing that political parties, institutions, national figures, intellectuals, youth, and women all share the responsibility of working together to turn this vision into a tangible reality that serves the future of the Kurdish people and guarantees their legitimate rights.
