The trial session is called the “Kobani case” by the Turkish occupation authorities, and has been ongoing since 2021 against the former co-chairs of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP), Selahattin Demirtas and Figen Yüksekdag, in addition to 108 politicians and human rights activists, including 20 parliamentarians and administrators from the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP).

During the ISIS mercenaries' attacks on Kobani in September 2014, the Peoples' Democratic Party played an important role in mobilizing the masses and closing the northern borders of the city of Kobani to ISIS mercenaries to prevent them from infiltrating it, as well as exerting pressure on the Turkish authorities to open corridors to transport the wounded.

During today's trial session, and after the ruling was pronounced by the judges of the Supreme Criminal Court in Ankara, slogans "Long live the resistance of the Peoples' Democratic Party" chanted throughout the hall.

The court charged the detained politicians and jurists with “undermining the unity and territorial integrity of the state,” “joining the organization,” and “inciting disrespect for the law.”

They were sentenced to various sentences, ranging from imprisonment for years to release for a number of them.

It sentenced Selahattin Demirtas to 20 years in prison on charges of “helping to destroy the unity and integrity of the state,” and 4 years and 6 months on charges of “incitement to commit a crime.” In addition, he was sentenced to two years and six months in prison for his speech on Nowruz on March 21, 2016, and for his speech on February 29, 2016 in Amed, allegedly “inciting the people to disrespect the law,” for one year and 6 months.

Figen Yüksekdag: She was sentenced to 19 years in prison, and the sentence was not commuted, and no penalty was imposed on “membership in the organization and management of the organization.” She was sentenced to 4 years and 6 months in prison for “incitement” and to 1 year and 6 months in prison for “propaganda for an organization.” He was imprisoned for a total period of 32 years and 9 months, in addition to the penalties imposed on various charges.
