The head of the Coalition for Civil Liberties and Rights in Italy, lawyer Arturo Salerni, who was a lawyer for the leader Abdullah Ocalan while he was in Italy (1998-1999), spoke to ANHA agency on the occasion of the anniversary of the international February 15 conspiracy.

Arturo Salerni indicated that he learned about the struggle of the Kurdish people when he was a lawyer for the leader Abdullah Ocalan and said: “Abdullah Ocalan received great sympathy from the Italian people during his stay in Rome and enjoyed great solidarity, and the Italian people’s sympathy for the Kurdish people increased even more with the Rojava Revolution in particular."

“The Rome court granted him asylum despite the objection of Italy and Turkey.”

Arturo Salerni explained that they were working on the issue of political asylum for Leader Ocalan while he was in Italy and that they were following up on the case. He said: “After Ocalan left Italy and was extradited to Turkey, the Rome court ruled to grant him political asylum.”

Salerni pointed out that the Rome court granted the leader political asylum despite the objection of the Italian and Turkish governments, and revealed that they had made some legal efforts to take future steps in accordance with the decision.

Arturo Salerni stated that they had repeatedly asked the government and parliament in Italy to take diplomatic steps in order to defend the leader Abdullah Ocalan in the context of the right to seek asylum, and he continued his speech by saying: “But Italian policy has not taken any notable or important steps over the course of 25 years, and there is a committee in Italy that demands the implementation of court decisions in such cases, and it must do the same for the freedom of Ocalan, the well-known popular leader.”

Arturo Salerni pointed out that Italy must adhere to its responsibilities related to its court’s decision regarding the right to asylum, which cannot be revoked. He concluded his speech by saying: “The conditions of Abdullah Ocalan’s detention and the imposition of isolation on him are completely inconsistent with the standards of imprisonment and protection guaranteed by the European Human Rights Convention for detainees.”
