“The death of Gina Amini while in the custody of Iran’s morality police was unlawful and occurred as a result of violence, and women in the country continue to face widespread discrimination,” a UN-mandated fact-finding mission said today.

“Our investigation proved that her death was unlawful and occurred as a result of physical violence while in the custody of state authorities,” Sarah Hussein, head of the independent international fact-finding mission in Iran, told the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva.

She stated that "the protests that followed were marred by flagrant human rights violations, including extrajudicial executions, arbitrary arrests, torture and ill-treatment, in addition to rape and sexual violence."

added, "These actions took place in the context of a widespread and systematic attack on women, girls and other people who express their support for human rights."

"Some of these serious human rights violations have reached the level of crimes against humanity," she added.

Sarah said that women and girls in Iran face daily discrimination since the protests that affect almost all aspects of their private and public lives.

She added, "It is difficult to understand that women in the twenty-first century's access to basic services and opportunities, such as schools, universities, hospitals, courts, or job opportunities in government or other sectors, is subject to an arbitrary condition, which is wearing the hijab."
