SDC and Democratic Work Movement discuss ways to strengthen Syrian–Syrian dialogue

The Damascus office SDC received Firas Mini, a representative and member of the political body of the Democratic Work Movement. Representatives of the SDC in Damascus discussed with him the latest political developments in Syria, developments related to the transitional period, and prospects for reaching a political solution, according to a statement published by the council on its website.

The meeting addressed the importance of strengthening Syrian–Syrian dialogue and expanding areas of understanding among political and societal forces, which, according to the participants, would contribute to build an inclusive national process based on the will of Syrians and laying the foundations for a state based on democracy, justice, and equal citizenship.

The two sides also discussed the importance of making transitional justice a central pillar of the coming phase by addressing the legacy of years of conflict, uncovering the truth, providing justice for victims, ensuring reparations, and upholding the principle of accountability, in a way that contributes to build trust and creat conditions for national reconciliation.

The discussion also touched on the need to safeguard and constitutionally and legally guarantee the rights of Syria’s various components, preserving the country’s ethnic, religious, cultural, and social diversity, while upholding equal citizenship and Syrians’ right to political participation and decision-making without discrimination.

The two sides further discussed the importance of involving various political and societal powers in shaping the country’s future and strengthening the role of civil society, trade unions, and political movements during the transitional period. This would help develop a shared Syrian vision that moves beyond the effects of the conflict and responds to Syrians’ aspirations for freedom, justice, and peace.

The two sides stressed the importance of continuing meetings and consultations among Syrian political and societal powers and strengthening channels of dialogue and coordination on issues related to the country’s future, in support of a Syrian political process leading to the establishment of a democratic and pluralistic state that respects the rights of its citizens, safeguards its diversity, and guarantees justice for all its people.
