Bafel Talabani welcomes US-Iran talks

Patriotic Union of Kurdistan President Bafel Jalal Talabani welcomed the meeting between U.S. and Iranian representatives in New York, saying that overcoming decades of division between the two countries requires political courage and that successful dialogue could lay the groundwork for greater peace and stability in the Middle East.

In a statement, Talabani congratulated the leaders of both countries and their negotiators, praising what he described as the wisdom, pragmatism and boldness they demonstrated during the talks. He said true leadership is measured not by the battles one fights, but by the peace they have the courage to build.

He said reaching a lasting agreement between the United States and Iran would not represent a concession of strength, but rather a “shared victory.” He added that by working together, the two countries could protect their national interests, preserve their dignity and demonstrate that diplomacy can serve as a means of safeguarding both interests and dignity.

Talabani said the United States and Iran do not need one side to emerge victorious over the other, but could move forward as partners in a “historic victory for global security and stability.” He expressed his belief that the peoples of both countries deserve a future not weighed down by conflict.

He noted that the success of the U.S.-Iranian dialogue could open the door to a new phase, unlocking the economic and social potential of both countries in an atmosphere of mutual respect. According to the statement, it could also have broad positive effects on the region.

Talabani said successful U.S.-Iranian dialogue could provide the Middle East with a foundation for lasting peace, enduring stability and shared economic prosperity, calling on leaders and diplomats to pursue the process with the same determination and courage that brought them to the negotiating table.

The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan president concluded his statement by saying that historic change is possible and calling for efforts toward “a secure and peaceful tomorrow.”
