Local sources within the occupied city of Afrin confirmed to ANHA correspondent that the Turkish-backed mercenaries have been setting fires in the villages and mountains of Afrin countryside for seven days.

The sources reported that the mercenaries started the fires in Darwish village, part of the Rajo district in occupied Afrin, since last night around 8:00 PM.

After seven days of fires spreading across numerous villages and vast green areas, the damage includes tens of thousands of trees, both fruit-bearing (such as olive, cherry, pomegranate, pistachio, fig, grape) and forest (such as cypress, pine, oak) varieties, among others.

Previously, the mercenaries had set fires in the land between several villages. The villages whose lands we have documented as burning include: (Adamo, Albeska, Balilko, Jala, Khallulko, Kosa, Shankila, B’arefa, Darwish), making a total of approximately nine villages targeted so far, with others yet to be documented.

Sources indicated that the fires are not being extinguished by anyone except a few remaining residents of Afrin, highlighting Turkey and its mercenaries’ efforts to destroy the natural environment of the occupied area.

It is noted that the Turkish occupation forces and their mercenaries have cut and burned more than 391,900 fruit-bearing and forest trees, intending to sell them, and have burned 12,000 hectares of agricultural land over the past six years of their occupation of Afrin.
