On the occasion of the 14th anniversary of the Syrian revolution, the Syrian Democratic Council (SDC) issued a statement reaffirming its commitment to the principles of freedom, dignity, and justice, which inspired the Syrian people's uprising against decades of authoritarian rule.
The statement emphasized that the popular movement was an expression of the national will to build a democratic, pluralistic state founded on the rule of law.
"Following the fall of the regime last December, Syria now stands at a critical juncture, facing significant challenges. Violence continues in certain regions, and the country is still grappling with the lasting consequences of years of war and division. The escalation in the coastal areas and the resulting civilian casualties underscore the urgent need for a nationwide ceasefire and an end to cycles of violence that hinder progress toward stability and peace.
Furthermore, the recently issued constitutional declaration, which was expected to mark a step forward in fulfilling the aspirations of the Syrian people, has been disappointing. It fails to adequately reflect the people’s ambitions for a just and democratic state.
Consequently, the SDC stresses the necessity of adopting comprehensive political solutions that consider Syria’s complex realities and respect the country’s pluralistic and diverse character.
Achieving the objectives of the revolution is not merely about changing the ruling system but requires a concerted effort to establish a new governance structure that genuinely represents the will of all Syrians, guarantees their rights, and upholds the principles of justice and democracy. The future that Syrians deserve is one based on national consensus—one that respects their aspirations, safeguards their freedoms, and upholds their dignity."
