Bakeries halt operations in Hasakah amid diesel price hike

Dozens of bakeries in Hasakah city and its countryside halted operations on Monday morning in protest against the increase in the price of diesel to 17,500 Syrian pounds, amid concerns that bakery owners could incur significant losses as the price of a bundle of bread remains at 4,000 pounds.

Bakeries in Hasakah city and its countryside halted operations on Monday morning following a rise in the price of diesel, after the decision issued by the Petroleum Products Pricing Committee on Sunday.

The decision sparked concern among residents and bakery owners. According to information obtained by ANHA agency, the bakeries stopped operating due to the increase in the price of diesel, which was set at 17,500 Syrian pounds. The new price is not compatible with the cost of bread production and the current selling price of a bundle of bread, which stands at 4,000 Syrian pounds.

Bakery owners said continuing to operate at the new diesel price while keeping the price of a bundle of bread unchanged would result in significant losses, prompting them to suspend operations pending a new price being set or a solution being found that takes production costs into account and ensures the continued distribution of bread to residents at affordable prices.

According to information obtained by ANHA correspondents, four public bakeries in Hasakah city, along with dozens of private bakeries, have halted operations. Two bakeries in Tal Tamr, three in al-Hol, four in Tal Hamis, three in al-Shaddadi and four in Tal Barak have also stopped operating.
