Researcher: European rapprochement with Damascus aims to reduce numbers of refugees
A researcher in Middle Eastern affairs believes that European rapprochement efforts with the Damascus government are part of the regional equation for normalization, and pointed out that there is a European attempt to reduce the number of refugees due to the economic cost, in addition to the security threats.
European reports revealed that the Italian government convinced the European Union to appoint a special envoy to Syria, and that the person is Christian Berger.
The newspaper reported that the European Union's foreign policy representative, Josep Borrell, appointed Berger as the new special envoy of the European Union to Syria.
The reports indicated that the European Union's decision to appoint Berger came after Italian pressure in Brussels, based on the fact that Rome is considered the focus of the maneuver to normalize relations with the Damascus government.
Reports also indicated that there is a new effort to convince German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to recognize "safe zones" in Syria in order to return refugees, and that Berlin has become open to holding talks with the Damascus government on the immigration file.
