According to local medical and human rights sources, the suicide bombing that targeted Mar Elias Church in the eastern Damascus neighborhood of Dweila resulted in the martyrdom of 22 men and women and left 63 others injured, some of whom remain in critical condition.

The explosion occurred on Sunday during a Mass attended by dozens of worshippers, when a suicide bomber detonated himself inside the church, causing a large number of casualties and a fire to break out within the building. Footage from the scene shows extensive destruction in the main hall and courtyard of the church.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far, while investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances and motives behind the bombing, amid widespread sorrow and anger in both the public and religious communities.

This attack is considered one of the deadliest assaults to hit Damascus in recent months and raises new questions about the fragility of the security situation—even in areas believed to be under tight surveillance.
