Protest held in Hasakah over new fuel prices

The protesters gathered in Peace Square to demand the provision of petroleum products and fixed prices that reflect citizens’ incomes amid worsening living and service conditions.

The protest came after new fuel prices were announced at midnight between Saturday and Sunday, September 13, 2026, by the Permanent Committee for Determining Petroleum Product Prices, citing rising global insurance and shipping costs.

Under the new pricing, a liter of 95-octane gasoline was set at 195 Syrian new liras, while 90-octane gasoline was priced at 185 liras. A household gas cylinder was set at 1,600 liras and an industrial cylinder at 2,560 liras.

Mahmoud Ayada, speaking on behalf of the protesters, said the popular movement has continued in Peace Square for 10 days. He said protesters had met with the governor of Hasakah and his deputy and received promises to resolve the electricity crisis and improve living conditions within a week.

He added that residents are facing extremely difficult living conditions due to the lack of basic necessities, including electricity, bread and water, as well as instability surrounding the new currency.

Ayada stressed the need to stop making promises without implementing them and pointed to residents’ suffering, asking, “How long will this suffering continue?”

Mohammad Mohammad, another resident, called on the energy minister to visit the streets and see residents’ conditions firsthand.

He called for “providing basic necessities, foremost among them water, electricity and fuel, rather than setting prices beyond citizens’ ability to afford.”

According to information obtained by ANHA agency from fuel station owners, taxi drivers and other transport workers in Hasakah, the new prices, despite being officially issued, have not yet taken effect in the city.

The previous pricing was issued on Sept. 4, 2026, and remained in effect until midnight on September 13. It set the price of a liter of 95-octane gasoline at 152 liras, 90-octane gasoline at 147 liras, and diesel at 125 liras. A household gas cylinder was priced at 1,470 liras and an industrial cylinder at 2,350 liras.
