Assyrian Democratic Party unveils martyrs’ monument in Tal Tamr

The Assyrian Democratic Party unveiled the Assyrian Martyrs’ Monument this evening in the Assyrian Martyrs’ Square in central Tal Tamr, in the presence of members of the Assyrian community and representatives of political and civil society groups in the area.

The ceremony began with a minute of silence in tribute to the souls of the martyrs. Ninos Isho, an official of the Assyrian Democratic Party, then delivered a speech stressing that Tal Tamr was chosen to host the monument because of the history and presence of the Assyrian people in the Khabur region. He said the monument was erected as a tribute to the martyrs, to commemorate their memory and preserve their sacrifices in the memory of future generations.

Isho explained that the monument is not merely a stone landmark, but serves as a testament to the memory of a people and chapters of its history, as well as to the sacrifices of its sons and daughters who lost their lives defending people, land, dignity and existence.

Isho also addressed the massacres, displacement and forced uprooting that the Assyrian people have experienced throughout their modern history, as well as the tragedies that befell their towns and villages and left deep scars on the collective memory. He noted that the Khabur region and Tal Tamr also endured such tragedies, particularly the attacks launched by ISIS on the Khabur villages, which involved killings, displacement and destruction.

For his part, Gharib Hasso, co-chair of the Democratic Union Party (PYD), stressed that commemorating the martyrs through monuments and symbolic landmarks aims to keep their sacrifices alive for future generations, noting that the martyrs represent symbols and role models for their peoples.

Hasso said the monument symbolizes the history and sacrifices of the peoples of the region, including Assyrians, Kurds, Arabs and others, stressing that the Khabur region and Tal Tamr will continue to live on despite the tragedies and painful events they have witnessed.

Hasso emphasized that the sacrifices of the martyrs reflect the peoples’ determination to preserve their existence and identity and continue their pursuit of freedom and dignity. He stressed that remembering the martyrs and commemorating their sacrifices is a responsibility toward future generations, ensuring that their memory is preserved and their legacy and sacrifices passed on.

The ceremony concluded with the lighting of candles in tribute to the sacrifices of the martyrs and in remembrance of them, renewing the commitment to preserving their legacy and memory and passing them on to future generations.
