Germany considers revoking protection residency for large number of Syrians

Germany is considering reviewing protection-based residence permits granted to Syrians, a move that could result in large numbers of them being required to leave the country.

The German Interior Ministry plans to instruct the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) to review protection-based residence permits granted to a large number of Syrians, according to the Neue Zürcher Zeitung.

According to government sources cited by the newspaper, the instructions could be issued after the state parliament election in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and the Berlin House of Representatives election scheduled for tomorrow, Sunday, potentially increasing the number of Syrians required to leave Germany.

The number of Syrians residing in Germany stands at approximately 912,386, according to the latest data from the Federal Statistical Office as of July 31, 2026.

According to the newspaper, more than 14,000 Syrians voluntarily left Germany between December 2024 and July 2026, including 7,725 people who benefited from the voluntary return program provided by the German authorities.
