Al-Shafei Al-Sheikh, 33, is being tried before a federal court in Alexandria, Virginia, near Washington, on charges that include hostage-taking, murder and conspiracy to commit murder.

The list of charges against the sheikh, a British citizen, indicates a death sentence against him, but US prosecutors are telling officials in Britain that they will not seek the death penalty against the sheikh or his friend in the group, Alexandra Kotey according to Al-Arabiya.net.

Al-Sheikh belongs to the 4-member cell of ISIS mercenaries, which attracted international attention after publishing videos depicting the killing of American journalists James Foley and Stephen Sotloff and aid workers Kayla Mueller and Peter Kassig, along with other victims.

The US military detained two of the four cell members, Sheikh and Alexanda Kotey, in Iraq before transferring them to the United States for trial.

Mohammed Emwazi, a British national who oversaw the executions, was killed in a 2015 drone strike. Ene Leslie Davis, the fourth member of the group, was convicted on terrorism charges and imprisoned in Turkey.

Kotey pleaded guilty in September 2021 to the murders of Foley, Sotloff, Mueller and Kassig. He is due to be sentenced next month.
