The US Army Central Command said today that ISIS is trying to re-establish itself, and the number of its attacks in Syria and Iraq is on track to double compared to last year.

Central Command announced in a statement that ISIS claimed responsibility for 153 attacks in both countries during the first six months of 2024. According to a US defense official, ISIS was behind 121 attacks in Syria and Iraq during 2023.

US Central Command explained, “The increase in attacks indicates that ISIS is trying to re-establish itself after several years of declining capabilities.”

This comes 10 years after ISIS announced the establishment of a “caliphate” over vast areas of Iraq and Syria, which were equivalent to half the area of the United Kingdom.”
