On Thursday, talks will be held between Turkey and Israel in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, with mediation by the Azerbaijani government, according to Israeli Broadcasting Authority reports this evening.

According to the report, Israel will present two main demands during the talks: first, ensuring that no military force exists near its border with Syria that could threaten its security; and second, confirming that Syria is free of strategic weapons that could directly endanger Israel.

Azerbaijan enjoys extensive security relations with Israel and is playing the role of mediator in discussions between Tel Aviv and Ankara concerning the Syrian file.

Turkish influence in Syria has raised Israeli concerns, prompting airstrikes and ground incursions aimed at pushing Damascus-controlled forces away from its borders.

Two days ago, the Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth revealed that the Israeli military had doubled its presence in the Golan Heights and the buffer zone with Syria, while also engaging in talks with Ankara to coordinate military activity in Syria.

According to the newspaper: “Israel has held talks with representatives from Turkey to coordinate military operations in Syria.”
