German prosecutors charge 4 Iraqis with membership in ISIS

German prosecutors have charged four Iraqi nationals with belonging to ISIS and fighting in its ranks in Iraq, while confirming that there is no evidence that they engaged in activities on behalf of the group inside Germany.

The Public Prosecutor’s Office in the eastern German city of Dresden announced today that it had brought charges against four Iraqi nationals for belonging to ISIS and fighting in its ranks, according to the German Press Agency (dpa).

The prosecution explained that the suspects, aged between 27 and 43, are suspected of having worked approximately 10 to 12 years ago as fighters or border guards for ISIS in Iraq in exchange for receiving financial payments.

German authorities arrested them last spring in the cities of Plauen, Chemnitz, and Leipzig. They are currently being held in custody pending the investigation.

The prosecution noted that the alleged crimes took place in Iraq, stressing that there is no evidence that they engaged in any activities on behalf of ISIS after entering Germany, and therefore there are no indications of a threat to Germany.

The Dresden Higher Regional Court is expected to consider the case and decide whether to admit it. If it does, the court will set dates for the trial.
