In a statement issued today to the public, the SDC addressed the bombing that struck Mar Elias Church in the south of Damascus.

The Council emphasized that “violating the sanctity of places of worship and attacking the lives of civilians constitutes a double crime that stands in stark opposition to all ethical and international conventions.”

It also noted that “the attack came at a time when the country is still seeking a safe horizon amid a complex transitional phase following the fall of the previous regime.”

The Council deemed the act “a terrorist attack, a flagrant breach of humanitarian law and national and religious values, an effort to sow fear, and a blow to Syria’s rich pluralism.”

The Council expressed its deepest condolences and sympathy to the families of the martyrs and the wounded, sharing in their grief over this tragic incident. It affirmed that “the Syrian people, with all their religious and ethnic components, will remain united in the face of all forms of terrorism and extremism, and such crimes will not shake their belief in their right to live in safety and dignity.”

It added, “This bombing serves as a serious warning and a message that must not be ignored. It comes amid growing security challenges facing Syria following the collapse of the authoritarian regime on December 8. It is an unprecedented assault in terms of timing and location, necessitating a reassessment of the security situation and a serious review of current policies to protect civilians and prevent terrorism from infiltrating the heart of the country once again.”

The Council strongly condemned “this heinous act” and affirmed that “the path to a safe and stable Syria passes through national democratic consensus and sincere cooperation among all Syrian forces that believe in a political solution and justice.”

The statement concluded by stressing the need for joint efforts to build a civil state that guarantees rights and freedoms and puts a definitive end to violence and terrorism in all its forms and sources.
