Six sources familiar with the matter told Reuters that representatives of the Syrian government and Lebanon’s Hezbollah held direct talks in Turkey in an effort to ease tensions between the two sides, marking the first known meeting of its kind between the two sides, which have been adversaries.

The sources, including two Syrian officials, a U.S. official and a senior Lebanese security source close to Hezbollah, told Reuters that Syrian officials and Hezbollah representatives met secretly at least once last month.

The six sources said last month’s meeting brought together Hezbollah representatives and officials from Syria’s intelligence services and Foreign Ministry. The meeting was held at the invitation of Turkish security and intelligence agencies as part of efforts to ease tensions.
