"Release of leader is a prerequisite for success of any peace process"

Members of the Democratic Union Party (PYD) in Aleppo revealed the gap between the stance of the occupying Turkish state, between word and deed, on the call of Leader Abdullah Ocalan for democratic society and peace, and made his release a prerequisite for the success of any peace process.

Following Leader Abdullah Ocalan's February 27 call for peace and a democratic society, politicians of the Democratic Union Party (PYD) in Aleppo stressed the necessity of his release and the cessation of Turkish attacks on the Mediya Defense Zones as a necessary condition for the success of any peace process.

They opined that the positions of the Turkish state are still contradictory. Although it welcomes the invitation of Leader Abdullah Ocalan officially, in reality it keeps its repressive policies intact and makes military attacks, proving that it has not dropped its mentality based on negating Kurdish existence.

Jihan Barkal, PYD Women's Council administrator, described Ocalan's offer as "a historic step and the most crucial milestone in the Kurdish cause" since it represents an indication of a genuine desire to end the armed struggle and to guarantee dialogue as the method of peaceful settlement of the Kurdish question.

She emphasized that "the Turkish state, even with its good words, still clings to an identity-denying mentality and fears any democratic model that recognizes Kurdish rights."

She considered the continued detention of Leader Abdullah Ocalan in Imrali as evidence that the Turkish state was afraid of his ideology and philosophy, which, she stated, are not threats to the state's existence but are a guarantee of its stability. She further stated that "unless Turkey rejects its nationalist mentality, it will not be able to move toward true peace."

In response, PYD representative Manan Omar referred to that mindset of the Turkish state, built on nationalism and denial of the rights of others, which has made it an eternal source of conflict. He further stated, "In order to impose its identity upon all, Turkey has distorted history and characterized the Kurds as an alien people, in spite of the fact that they are the founders of the modern Turkish state."

Omar was also critical of Turkey's repressive policies, pointing out that its words after granting permission to Leader Abdullah Ocalan to submit his call through the Imrali delegation were not accompanied by any practical actions. "Instead, it continues attacking and precludes any possibility for stability."

Walat Mamo, Democratic Union Party (PYD) Public Relations Office co-chairmanship, asserted that Leader Abdullah Ocalan's appeal is not against the Turkish state but aims to free the Turkish and Kurdish people from the war cycle.

He wrote, "Just as the creator established the Kurdistan Freedom Movement for the liberation of the Kurds from genocide, so his present call offers an opportunity for Turkey to accept Kurdish identity and secure its internal peace."

Maamo also warned against attempts by Turkey to dilute the content of the appeal, noting that the denial to free leader Abdullah Ocalan and the continued attacks on the Mediya Defense Zones indicate the absence of any genuine will to achieve a solution.
