Kurdish delegation meets with UN about Makhmour camp
Kurdish personalities informed the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (ÛNCH) about the suffering of refugees in the Makhmour camp, as a result of the Iraqi army's continuous attempts to besiege the camp, which is inhabited by 12,000 people.
On Friday, a delegation consisting of Kurdish personalities in the Diaspora and their European friends met with the representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in the Middle East and Africa to brief the UNHCR on what the camp is witnessing over the continuous attempts of the Iraqi army to besiege the camp and surround it with barbed wire, and military observation towers.
For 8 days (May 20), the Iraqi army has been trying to surround Makhmour camp (the martyr Rustam Judy) with trenches and put up walls and towers, but it is met with refusal from its residents.
The delegation of the Kurds and their friends included both members of the external relations of the Kurdish Democratic Society Center in Switzerland (CDK-S), Ahmed Yaman and Ramadan Bitar, and the head of the Chemical Weapons Initiative, Dr. Pep Safari.
The meeting that brought together the delegation with the representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in the Middle East and Africa, Alexander Tyler, ended with the two parties explaining the content of the meeting to the media.
According to Ramadan Bitar, the member of the foreign relations of the Kurdish Community Center in Switzerland, after the meeting, the delegation briefed the Commission on what the camp is witnessing, and on the irresponsible behavior of the Iraqi government towards the camp.
While the head of the initiative to combat chemical weapons, Dr. Pip Safari, referred to the delegation's call for the UNHCR to form committees and visit the camp, see its reality, and compare it with the Geneva Conventions, and the need for the UNHCR to abide by its laws regarding the refugees in the camp.
For his part, the representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in the Middle East and Africa, Alexander Tyler confirmed in his statement that the UNHCR is aware of the "current problems" and the UNHCR will take into account the demands of the camp residents.
Alexander Tyler received from the Kurdish delegation a file prepared by the delegation on what is happening in Makhmour camp, and the demands of its residents.
