Future of imposing sovereignty on West Bank under stern warning from EU

In the last European reaction to the Israeli statements about annexing areas of the West Bank, the French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, Spanish Prime Minister Fedro Sanchez and Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte warned the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of the consequences of annexing settlements and valleys, which Netanyahu intends to announce the decision in next July.

And the Israeli media reported: "Macron asked Netanyahu not to take any unilateral measures as such a step will undermine the stability in the Middle East. Only dialogue with the Palestinians and a just and balanced solution will give the Israelis peace, security and stability."

The media itself reported that British Prime Minister Boris Johnson sent a similar message to Netanyahu, while the Spanish Prime Minister sent a message to Netanyahu and the Israeli Security Minister, Benny Gantz, in which he called "to respect international law and reach a solution on the basis of a two-state solution in accordance with the United Nations' resolution," while the Italian letter stressed "the need to renew negotiations with the Palestinians and reach a two-state solution based on international law."

Last Tuesday, the French Foreign Minister stated that it is necessary to "refrain from implementing the plan of annexing the Palestinian Valley from the occupied West Bank territories," stressing that "any such decision cannot remain without a response."

This comes after the European Union's foreign minister, Josep Borrell, warned Israel against taking a plan to unilaterally annex areas of the West Bank to it. He stressed that the European Union would not recognize any changes without an agreement between the Israeli and Palestinian sides.

"A two-state solution, with Jerusalem the capital, is the only way to achieve sustainable peace and stability in the region," Borrell said after a meeting with the European Union foreign ministers, adding that the EU will not recognize any changes to the 1967 borders unless the Israelis and Palestinians agree.

The European Union meeting considered the Israeli steps "a violation of international law."

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas had also announced the suspension of all agreements signed with Israel and America due to the Israeli annexation step, while Jordan formally warned of the implications of this step on the peace agreement with Israel.

Israeli annexation plan

From the moment the new Israeli government was formed, the Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that Israel intends to impose Israeli sovereignty on the West Bank, and during the plan, Israel intends to annex more than 130 settlements in the occupied West Bank and the Jordan Valley that runs between the Sea of Galilee and the Dead Sea, becoming part of its eastern border with Jordan, while estimates in Israel indicate that the annexation plan includes 30% of the area of the West Bank according to Israeli sources.

The Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has stated that: "Israel has a historic opportunity that has not existed since 1948 to annex parts of the West Bank."

Yesterday, the head of the Israeli coalition government, Mickey Zohar, declared: "Sovereignty will be imposed on all Jewish settlements in Israel," saying: "The date to start this step is the first of next July."

After the threats, will Israel implement the annexation plan?

Senior Israeli security sources suggested to the "Walla" Israeli website: "It is not possible to impose Israeli sovereignty in practice on settlements in the West Bank by the specified date (next July)."

They said: "There is no time and conditions appropriate for the consequences of this step from the deteriorating security situation in the West Bank and Gaza in particular."

They stated: "It is likely that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will suffice at the aforementioned date to announce the annexation, postponing its implementation for several months because its security implications will be huge for Israel."
