South Korean official reveals potential meeting between Trump, Kim Jong Un

On Friday, South Korean Minister of Unification Chung Dong-young referred to a "high" possibility of a meeting between President Trump and Kim Jong Un next week.

Chung told reporters that North Korea is "paying attention to the United States," mentioning "multiple signals… indicating a high likelihood that a meeting will take place."

The South Korean minister expected the meeting to occur on the sidelines of President Trump's scheduled visit to South Korea on Wednesday, where he will attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum.

US media reported that officials from the Trump administration have discussed arranging a meeting with Kim, though no official announcement has been made. The last meeting between the two leaders took place during Trump’s first term in 2019.

Trump had previously expressed his desire to meet Kim again, suggesting that such a meeting could happen within this year.

Their previous meetings were held in June 2018 in Singapore, February 2019 in Vietnam, and June 2019 at the border between the two Koreas.

Last September, Kim stated that he was ready to communicate with Washington again, recalling "good memories" of Donald Trump, on the condition that the United States lifts restrictions on his country’s nuclear weapons program.
