The Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) held its twelfth congress from May 5-7 and issued its final statement on May 12, revealing that the congress resulted in a decision to halt the armed struggle and move toward a political and democratic solution. However, despite this significant shift, the Turkish state has not taken any countermeasures. Instead, it has continued to launch airstrikes using warplanes and drones on the Mediya Defense Zones, a military escalation that runs counter to the solution launched by Leader Abdullah Ocalan on February 27.

The Absence of a Turkish Response… and the Streets Are Uneasy

In this context, the residents of the city of Tal Tamr in al-Jazira Canton of North and East Syria expressed their opinions regarding the decisions of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) conference. Citizen Fatima Suleiman Maish said, "So far, we have not seen any Turkish response to the party's decision to cease the armed struggle. On the contrary, Ankara continues to escalate its military attacks."

Fatima Maish called on the international community to "pressure Turkey" to halt its attacks, respect the party's decision, and sit at the negotiating table as a step toward a just peace.

A Historic Conference... and Fears of a Lack of Turkish Seriousness

For his part, intellectual Khaled Mohammed Ali, a citizen from Tal Tamr, said: "After Leader Abdullah Ocalan's call, the party responded and held its 12th conference, taking a historic step toward a peaceful solution. However, Turkey did not take a single step in the same direction."

Ali emphasized that the Turkish state must "immediately" begin constitutional and political measures to guarantee the rights of Kurds within the country, including their representation in parliament and state institutions.

Ali added: "We, the people of North and East Syria, see the party conference as a constructive step toward stability, but the Turkish government seems to be pursuing the option of war and escalation."

"Turkey Doesn't Commit"

For her part, citizen Kamla Ibrahim expressed her clear reservations, saying: "The Turkish state cannot be trusted. Our experience with it is clear; it has never adhered to an agreement and continues to commit massacres against the Kurds and all other peoples."

She emphasized that the women of North and East Syria reject the "dictatorial Turkish mentality," and they believe that Ankara's policies rely on eliminating every dissenting voice inside and outside Turkey.

A call to support the political line... and a warning of Turkish intentions

At the end of his speech, Khaled Mohammed Ali called for an active role by the media and intellectuals in conveying the importance of what happened at the PKK conference and the need to inform the public of the party's political transformation at this critical stage. He said, "This awareness must be built, because this is a sensitive period and may determine the future of the region."
