“Qamishlo Centennial” discussion held at cultural festival

Coinciding with the centenary of Qamishlo’s founding, the third day of the “Qamishlo Cultural Festival” featured an open discussion titled “Qamishlo Centennial” focusing on the city’s history and origins. The program also included a tribute to writer Koni Rash and a poetry evening attended by several poets.

The discussion was attended by intellectuals and people interested in the city’s history. It began with a minute of silence in tribute to those killed, after which writer Koni Rash spoke about his works documenting Qamishlo’s history and his efforts to record key stages in the city’s development. He said he continues to write about the city and has a new book that is scheduled for publication.

He also discussed the founding of Qamishlo, the development of urban areas and demographic changes in the Jazira region. He explained that the area experienced urban growth in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, particularly after World War I, while addressing the political and administrative changes that shaped the region during that period.

The discussion prompted interaction from attendees, who shared their views on Qamishlo’s history and raised questions with the speaker. The Union of Intellectuals of Rojava Kurdistan then honored Koni Rash in recognition of his efforts and writings on the city’s history.

The third day also featured a poetry evening with the participation of poets Abdulsamad Mahmoud, Shaf Hassan, Hikmat Ibrahim, Abboud Makhsu, Dildar Ashti, Jan Ibrahim, Behzad Hussein and Ajdar Isso, who presented a selection of poems to the audience.
