The Media Office of the PUK called on the KDP to release activists and journalists from its prisons in Hawler and Badinan.

The Media Office of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan issued a statement about what the Kurdistan Democratic Party is practicing against it through misleading propaganda.

The statement came in response to the Kurdistan Democratic Party's description of Sulaymaniyah Governorate as an unsuitable place for the media and lacking freedom of thought and opinion.

The statement read: "Unfortunately, the Kurdish people are being misled, and the truth is being distorted by the media of the ruling wing of the Kurdistan Democratic Party. Therefore, if they care about press and opinion freedom, we ask them to free the activists and journalists imprisoned in Hawler and Badinan’s dark prisons. Your crocodile tears are not needed by Sulaymaniyah; instead, you should take a lesson in freedom and democracy from the proud people of the city."

In a related context, the authorities of the KDP have been detaining journalist and editor of Roj News Agency, Sulayman Ahmed, for 319 days, after the Duhok Criminal Court issued a three-year prison sentence against him on July 29, despite the absence of any evidence in the case file which sparked widespread controversy among media and human rights circles.
