The Guardian's editorial described Leader Abdullah Ocalan’s call for fighters to lay down their arms as a significant moment but stressed that a lasting solution requires greater rights for the Kurds.

The newspaper noted that after four decades of fighting, this was a highly important declaration. However, it urged caution in optimism, recalling that a two-year ceasefire between the PKK and the Turkish state collapsed a decade ago, leading to some of the worst violence in the long-running conflict.

This attempt, according to The Guardian, is taking place in a completely different political context, before the contours of Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s illiberal democracy became fully evident. The need to end the violence remains urgent, but this time, peace efforts are driven by domestic politics and regional developments.

Putin optimistic after U.S. Talks on Ukraine ceasefire

Russian President Vladimir Putin described initial contacts with the U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration as "inspiring a certain degree of hope", his most positive remarks since U.S.-Russia talks began on ending the war in Ukraine, according to a report by the Financial Times.

Putin’s comments came as Russian and American diplomats met in Istanbul yesterday to discuss terms for restoring diplomatic relations, which had been severed since Russia’s military intervention in Ukraine.

Speaking at a meeting with intelligence agency leaders, Putin stated, "There is mutual readiness to work toward restoring intergovernmental relations and addressing the vast number of systemic and strategic issues that have accumulated within the global structure, leading to the Ukrainian crisis and other regional conflicts."

His remarks came as U.S. President Donald Trump adopted several Kremlin-aligned positions, clashing with Ukraine and its European allies at the United Nations and within the G7 over labeling Russia as the aggressor.
