Patriotic Union of Kurdistan announces its commitment to elections date for South Kurdistan Parliament

The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan confirmed its commitment to the date of holding the elections for the Parliament of South Kurdistan, which is scheduled to be held on the 10th of next June.

Union spokesman Saadi Ahmed Berah said in a statement, “The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan is committed to the date of holding the Kurdistan Parliament elections on 6/10/2024, as decided by the President of the Kurdistan Region.”

He added, "The National Union believes that the Kurdistan Parliament elections are the best way to strengthen democracy and overcome this crisis phase at the internal level and the region in general."

Yesterday, the Kurdistan Democratic Party announced its boycott of the parliamentary elections “for violating the law,” considering the recent Federal Court decisions to be “unconstitutional,” while threatening to withdraw from the political process.

Accordingly, the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan commented that the withdrawal of the Kurdistan Democratic Party from the parliamentary elections in South Kurdistan is premature.

The Presidency of the Southern Kurdistan Government had announced the date of the parliamentary elections in Southern Kurdistan on June 10, after postponing it repeatedly as a result of political differences between the two main parties in Southern Kurdistan and disagreements with Baghdad.

On February 21, the Supreme Court - the highest judicial authority in Iraq - issued a decision limiting the number of members of the Parliament  of Southern Kurdistan Government to 100 instead of 111, and handing over the High Elections Commission to manage the region’s elections instead of another local body.
