The Iraqi Council of Representatives elected Nizar Amidi as President of the Republic today in the second round of voting, after he failed to obtain the required two-thirds majority in the first round.

The second round of voting was held with a quorum of 249 MPs. Amidi received 227 votes, while Muthanna Amin received 15 votes.

The election session came after political controversy and disputes that began following the elections held in October 2025, and it witnessed a boycott by some blocs, most notably the State of Law Coalition, Haq (Rights Movement), and the Kurdistan Democratic Party.
