The former Chairman of the Committee against Torture, Mauro Palma, drew attention to the conditions of isolation imposed on Leader Abdullah Ocalan, and sent a letter to the Committee, in which he asked European monitoring bodies to turn to Imrali to find a way to apply the standards applied to everyone, to Leader Abdullah Ocalan as well.

Palma stated in the letter that if there is no right to hope for a life sentence, he does not believe that the punishment is compatible with respect for humanity, and he said that this opinion is consistent with the decisions taken by the European Court of Human Rights, explaining that the Committee against Torture has adopted the principle that every prisoner has the opportunity to reintegrate into society, and he also touched on isolation practices in his message.

Palma pointed out that leader Abdullah Ocalan is being held in strict isolation conditions on Imrali Island, and said that European monitoring bodies must put Abdullah Ocalan's case on their agenda and conduct an investigation directly.

Mauro Palma, who served as Chairman of the Committee against Torture between 2007 and 2011, was part of the delegation that visited Imrali Island.

Palma is now head of the European Prison Center at Tri University in Rome, and is also a member of the board of directors of the Italian Institute for Philosophical Studies.
