DAA delegation meets with Governor of Aleppo to discuss issue of Afrin IDPs
A delegation headed by Badran Jia Kurd, Advisor to the Democratic Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria, met with the Governor of Aleppo to discuss the issue of Afrin's displaced persons and the implementation of the terms of the agreement signed regarding the Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh neighborhoods in Aleppo.

As part of the efforts made by the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria to strengthen the foundations of the Syrian-Syrian national dialogue and to reinforce the agreement signed between the Syrian Democratic Forces and the Damascus authorities on March 10, a delegation from the Democratic Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria met today with the Governor of Aleppo.
The delegation included Badran Jia Kurd, advisor to the Democratic Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria, and Hevin Suleiman and Nouri Sheikho, co-chairs of the General Council of the Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh neighborhoods, as well as representatives from the security forces, diplomatic relations, and the Women's Coordination Office.
The delegation was received at the Aleppo Governorate building by the Governor of Aleppo, Azzam al-Gharib, and his deputy, Ali Hanoura, as well as the head of the Aleppo City Council, Muhammad Ali al-Aziz, and Masoud Battal, the official responsible for the Afrin region under the Damascus authorities.
During the meeting, Badran Jia Kurd, advisor to the Autonomous Administration, addressed the obstacles preventing the return of the forcibly displaced people of Afrin, who number approximately 250,000, to their villages and city. These obstacles are due to the security challenges resulting from the presence of some "factions" that have not been fully integrated into the Syrian Ministry of Defense, and the ongoing violations against civilians.
Jia Kurd also emphasized the need to establish a timetable to end the suffering of hundreds of thousands of displaced persons spread across the regions of North and East Syria and to ensure a safe and dignified return by providing the current government and the international community with guarantees to protect the people of Afrin from any danger that might threaten their safety now and in the future.
For his part, Aleppo Governor Azzam al-Gharib stated that, based on instructions from Ahmed al-Sharaa, they are working to resolve the issue of Afrin's displaced persons as quickly as possible.
Al-Gharib noted that they are working to resolve the problems and obstacles impeding the voluntary and dignified return of Afrin's people, in coordination with the Democratic Autonomous Administration.
Hiven Suleiman, the co-chair of the General Council of the Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh neighborhoods, emphasized the need to remove the impurities of the ideas of the collapsed Baath Party and to leave the choice of governing each region to its people, based on the saying, "The people of Mecca know their valleys best."
The two sides agreed to form a committee for Afrin's displaced people to organize the voluntary return process and provide the necessary studies and statistics to the public, serving as a supportive tool in proposing decisions for the future of the city's residents.
In the same context, the two sides agreed to develop an action plan based on the items discussed and to hold a series of future meetings to clarify the frameworks and mechanisms of action and expedite the resolution of the issue as soon as possible. This will be within the framework of Article 5 of the agreement signed between the Syrian Democratic Forces and the Damascus authorities, which stipulates "ensuring the return of all displaced Syrians to their towns and villages and ensuring their protection by the Syrian state."
Regarding the Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh neighborhoods, discussions between the two sides noted the progress made in completing the agreement's provisions and the need for the Aleppo City Municipality, in coordination with the People's Municipality, to provide services in both neighborhoods to meet the needs of the residents and resolve the problems caused by the Ba'ath Party regime, from marginalization and discrimination to the imposition of a siege.
The session concluded with both sides emphasizing the need to strengthen the foundations of Syrian-Syrian dialogue and ensure the participation of all in shaping the future of the new Syria.
